10 Things About Life Where Cattle Outnumber People

I’m a big map geek. I love taking those “where should you live?” Buzzfeed quizzes and playing TapQuiz on my phone while I’m waiting in line at the grocery store. So when I saw this map come across my Facebook news feed, I immediately got excited and checked out how my county and state measured up.

As you know, I live in Kansas which clearly is primarily cattle and not people. There are a few counties that have far more people than cattle (Johnson, Wyandotte, Shawnee etc.) but Anderson county, my good ole home sweet home, is comprised of 80-90% cattle. Isn’t that amazing?! Check out western Kansas, where most counties are 90% cattle and only 10% (or less) people.

So, to celebrate this map-tastic fact, here are

10 things about life where cattle outnumber people:

  1. The smell of cow poop is always in the air.
  2. We have the best sunsets.
  3. Instead of limos, high schoolers take “the good truck” to prom.
  4. You can see the stars so much more clearly here.
  5. A trip to the grocery store isn’t just a few blocks, it’s a “trip to town” and is planned in advance.
  6. Rodeos are a commonplace event – almost every county has one during the yearly fair.
  7. You’re more likely to see cowboy boots as everyday apparel and not just during “barn parties.”
  8. The compliment “You’ve got a nice set of calves” doesn’t have the same meaning out here but is still just as coveted.
  9. Business lunches take place at the sale barn cafe instead of the local bistro.
  10. Instead of Bonnaroo or Coachella, vacations are centered around Cornstock and Country Stampede.

I love my home – what do you love about where you live? What makes it unique?

Until next time,
